Information

An antidepressant which acts as a pre-synaptic alpha2-antagonist, which increases central noradrenergic and serotinergic neurotransmission. It also acts as an H1 histamine antagonist; this accounts for its sedative effects which are prominent in overdose.

Short term effects

The most common effect following ingestion is sedation. Other features may include nausea, vomiting, headache, tremor, miosis, disorientation, ataxia, tachycardia, bradycardia and hypotension. Rhabdomyolysis has been reported. Effects on the central nervous system may be enhanced or prolonged following co-ingestion of other central nervous system depressants, including alcohol.
