Diphenhydramine is an ethanolamine-derivative antihistamine.This medicine is used as a sleep aid to temporarily relieve sleeping difficulties. The main ingredient diphenhydramine is an antihistamine which works by blocking the effects of histamine and causes drowsiness. It decreases the time it takes to sleep and also helps improve the quality and depth of sleep. Diphenhydramine was one of the first effective antihistamine agents discovered, its properties being described in 1946.
