Information

Tryptamine. Indolalkylamine. Hallucinogen. Hallucinogenic tryptamines cause effects primarily by serotonin receptor agonism.

Short term effects

Visual, auditory or tactile hallucinations, anxiety, psychotic features, dilated pupils, hypertension and tachycardia, possibly elevated body temperature and convulsions may occur. Smoking tryptamines may be irritant to the lungs and throat. A 15 month review of the American Association of Poison Control Centers' Total Exposures Surveillance System database revealed 41 exposures with tachycardia (37%), hypertension (17%) agitation (59%) and hallucinations (39%) as the main clinical features (Wilson et al, 2005).
