Selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor (SSRI). Used for the treatment of major depression, bulimia nervosa and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Death data

Death has been reported after ingestion of 6-12 g (Compton et al, 2005; Kincaid et al, 1990)

Short term effects

Central nervous system features include tremor, agitation, dizziness, fatigue, drowsiness, coma and convulsions. Nausea, vomiting, dilated pupils and sweating may occur. Cardiovascular features seen with SSRIs include tachycardia, hypotension, hypertension, prolongation of QT interval and QRS duration, Torsade de Pointes, and cardiac arrest.
