An adjunctive treatment for cortical myoclonus, Piracetam is a nootropic pyrrolidone with a complex mechanism of action involving ion channels and actions on NMDA receptors and electron transport in mitochondria.

Short term effects

The most common adverse effects following therapeutic doses are hyperkinesia, insomnia, weight increase, somnolence, nervousness and depression. Other reported adverse effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, ataxia, vertigo, confusion, agitation, hallucinations, rash and angioedema.
