Information

Quinine is a medication that was originally designed to treat malaria. Subsequent research has found that it can also be moderately effective in reducing the frequency of leg cramps.

Short term effects

General features: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, flushing, rash, tinnitus and impaired hearing. Cardiac features: Tachycardia, dysrhythmias, hypotension, QT and/or QRS prolongation, torsade de pointes and cardiac arrest may occur. Visual features: Blurred vision, defective colour perception, visual field constriction and blindness may occur. These effects may be delayed for up to 12-18 hours. Visual loss is predominantly in the peripheral fields in milder cases. Other features: Oliguria and acute kidney injury from intravascular haemolysis, thrombocytopenia, hypokalaemia, convulsions and coma (especially in children) have been reported. Hypoglycaemia, from quinine-induced insulin release, has also been reported in both therapeutic use and acute overdose.
